Here is a little primer on some of the terms I use for my non poker friends and family.
First thing to note is when I am throwing out numbers that is the amount of chips I have, it is not real money. Real money only comes into play at the end when you get eliminated (or win the whole thing) and get a cash prize. The real money is far, far less than the chips you have in the tourney. Definitions: Blinds: This is a forced bet that is required by two players in the beginning of the hand, there is a small blind (SB) and big blind (BB), the blinds rotate around the table every hand so the same person does not always pay. The blinds are not a big deal at the beginning of the tourney because they are small in comparison to your chips but they go up and by the end they have escalated very high and stealing and defending your blinds becomes very important. Stealing a blind: Raising before the flop, with a bad hand to take the blind money. Defending: Stopping someone from stealing by calling or reraising Flop: First 3 cards on the board that are shared by everyone Turn: 4th card on board River: Last card on board Button: Last person to act pre flop before the blinds and last to act after the flop. This is good because you have more info before you act. Orbits (sometimes called M) The total amount of blind money on each hand. If you sat there and did nothing it is the number of times around the table you can sit there before the blinds eat your entire stack. In reality you can't do this because blinds go up. The reason I use this term is that it gives an idea of how well I am doing. It also helps me decide what kind of hands to play. With a high M you can play a lot more hands hoping they develop, with a low M you can't because it will be all in prior to the flop. check: If you choose not to bet when it is your turn and no one bet before you. check raise: It is a really strong move because you checked with a good hand to induce someone else to bet. Sometimes you can use it as a bluff and it is very effective if not overdone. Bubble: the bubble is when you are close to getting paid. For example if 45 people get paid and there are 46 or 47 people left you are on the bubble. It really sucks to bust one away from the bubble when you played for 2 days straight. Because of this it is a great time to steal from the medium and short stacks. If there are any other terms I used that you don't understand let me know. |

2016 WSOP
This blog is for me to share my 2016 WSOP experience. Hopefully I have something good to write about :-)
Feel free to post comments because I like to hear from friends and family when I am playing a tournament series.
